Big King & surrounds – photo essay

This has been put together by our candidate Harry Doig, who lives in Three Kings and took his camera up the mountain one day recently.

The maunga that we love.

But it could be better!

Spot the weeds.

How about some interpretive signage?

And then we must grasp the opportunity when the quarry is decommissioned to not only ensure high quality housing but also to enhance the reserve.

They and us deserve better.

Refugees As Survivors NZ fundraiser at MR Intermediate

We popped along to this great event at the Mt Roskill Intermediate School Hall earlier today.  Great to see so many of Mt Roskill’s cultures represented with dance performances, martial arts, craft stalls, hair braiding, and lots of different food from different refugee communities like Afghani, Iraqi and Burmese.

Congratulations to Refugees As Survivors NZ for organising a wonderful day, and for all their hard work with refugees in our community.  We are keen to look at how Puketapapa Local Board can support their work in the future, and how we can encourage the communities they work with to have a voice in local government too.

Below are a few photos I took:

The hall filling up with people watching the performances

A very high energy dance group, from Burundi I think.
Kenosis the Clown dancing to Staying Alive.
Children making their mark on canvas.

One of the RASNZ helpers getting her face painted.

Central Leader on election result

Published in the Central Leader, print edition, Wednesday 13th October 2010.

Husband and wife win seats on local board

It’s new beginnings all round for Michael Wood and Julie Fairey.

The husband and wife team have been voted on to the Puketapapa Local Board and have also just become parents again with the birth of their second child Daniel.

Mr Wood had run for election twice before but this was Ms Fairey’s first foray into campaigning and the Mt Roskill couple is humbled by the win.

“I knew Michael would get in but it’s been a bit of a surprise for me,” Ms Fairey says.

“It’s been exciting and the messages of support have been very touching…”
